The Mitsubishi Sportback builds on the already competent Lancer sedan, although the overall length is slightly longer to accommodate the new hatch. One-touch auto-folding rear seats split 60:40 to make room for “active lifestyle” parcels and Mitsubishi dropped the rear cargo area floor by three inches to create 52.7 cubic-feet of space when the rear thrones are folded flat.

Powertrain options will come from the standard Lancer and Lancer Ralliart range, meaning you get a 2.4-liter 168 HP, 167 ft-lb with either a five-speed manual or six-speed CVT automatic transmission in the Sportback GTS or if you opt for the Sportback Ralliart, you get a 2.0-liter MIVEC turbocharged engine with a whopping 237 HP and 253 ft-lb of torque. The Sportback Ralliart gets the quick-shifting six-speed Twin Clutch-Sportronic Shift Transmission (TC-SST) shared with the Lancer Evolution, as well as some nifty magnesium paddle shifters.

Hyundai’s 2011 Sonata – a car that has only been on sale in the US for two weeks – has received its first recall after complaints started pouring in regarding a malfunction on the front door lock mechanisms.

It’s not really the kind of start Hyundai is expecting with their biggest volume vehicle but after the company began receiving complaints from passengers that the hinge on the front doors of the 2011 Sonata can get stuck in an open position, which would then make them impossible to close. While the likelihood of this happening is extremely rare – one would have to pull the door latch while holding the ‘lock button’, which would then be counterintuitive to common sense – it was serious enough for Hyundai to do some damage control.

According to Hyundai spokesman Miles Johnson, "Anything to do with door latches warrants a recall. New parts are arriving in dealerships now, and the fix should not take more than an hour.”

All in all, over 47,300 Sonatas have been recalled with most of them occurring in the brand’s home country of South Korea. In the US, all the 1,300 Sonatas that have been sold since they came out two weeks ago are also being recalled.

It certainly doesn’t help Hyundai to be receiving this problem soon after the Sonata went on sale, but at least the South Korean brand is moving fast in rectifying the situation.

The small car market gets hotter with Hyundai planning to manufacture its compact car i10 in India. i10 from Hyundai will cost Rs 3.39 lakh. Hyundai Brand Ambassador Shahrukh Khan was also present during premiere of Hyundai i10. Hyundai expects i10 to be as popular as its Santro and the car will compete with Maruti’s Wagon R, Zen Estilo, and Indica Xeta from Tata.

The 1.1 litre Hyundai i10 is driven by petrol engine. Hyundai expects to sell 1.5 lakh i10 cars in India next year. The company will also launch a diesel version of 1.1 litre engine next year. The new car will be available in Rs 3.39 lakh and Rs 4.90 lakh variants for Indian market.

Hyundai Motors India will manufacture the car in India and will export to other countries. Hyundai plans to use its India facility as a manufacturing hub and India will account for 30 percent of overseas production by year 2009.
Small car segment has seen a good amount of growth. Tata Motors has been very active with its small car project. M & M is also in talks with Renault for launching a small car.

Jae Kook Choi, HMC President said, “Hyundai Motor in India is poised to play an important role not only in India but also in HMC’s global plans and we hope that with India becoming a hub for small cars, we expect production in the country to account for 30 per cent of overseas production by 2009.”

The company will use its India based facility to export 1 lakh units of Hyundai Santro and Hyundai i10 during next year.
